1-2 Draw Earth Cutaway

A Scale Drawing of Our Planet

Draw a series of concentric rings to represent Earth’s interior, its surface, and its atmosphere. Choose a scale that best illustrates the following information:

  • Core. The radius of Earth’s iron core is 3,400 kilometers.
  • Mantle. The layer above the core, called the mantle, extends 3,000 kilometers above the core.
  • Crust. The outermost layer, called the crust, is about 30 to 40 kilometers thick.
  • Atmosphere. The layers of the atmosphere—the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere—are described earlier.

What difficulties do you encounter in trying to do this? What does your diagram reveal about the relative thickness of the crust and the atmosphere in comparison with Earth’s diameter?
